about
My latest release as Bixlee is a lush, synthesizer-driven cover of the song “Doot-Doot,” originally released by the band Freur in 1983. This song has always filled me with the perfect kind of childhood nostalgia. It captures the feeling of the mid-80’s perfectly, while also sounding suspiciously ahead of its time. It seems doubtful that I ever even heard this song during my own childhood, but yet I feel like it has always been with me like a familiar dream. With that dreamlike vision in mind, my version of "Doot-Doot" features washed-out synth pads, crystalline vocals, minimal drums, and pulsating VHS effects, taking the listener back to an uncanny place that perhaps never truly existed.
As I’ve grown up and have recently become a father, this song will always remind me of my son’s first year on this planet. He’s not using full words yet, but we connect over music and this song specifically always makes him smile. The lyrics, for me, evoke the idea of communicating through machines and music in place of words.
As I was recording this song (with my one-year old helping to mash the keyboard on some of the non-musical synth parts) I found myself overcome with the realization that he will never experience an analog world. He is destined to grow up in a digital world, shaped by the internet, AI, social media, and whatever else is yet to come. I hope that years from now, my son will hold fond memories of this song, much like I do today, and the familiar dream that is “Doot-Doot” will continue to echo through the digital age and beyond.
